Columbia Wetlands Outpost – S. Pate

Guided Float Trips

Columbia Wetland Outpost is so much more than just a river trip. It's an exploration into the depths of North America's longest intact wetlands. The wetlands are surrounded by the towering stunning Rocky and Purcell mountains of the Kootenay Rockies and are teaming with wildlife and birds. This relaxed wetlands ecosystem tour is an experience like no other.

Start your adventure at the gorgeous interpretive center/office perched above the valley floor before being transported to a private parking area on shores of the mighty Columbia River. Experienced guides with an incredible love of the Columbia Valley will provide you with an introduction of the landscape and the days adventures. Once you are secure in your life vests you will follow a boardwalk trail making your way to the wetlands. One of our favorite parts of the trek to the boat dock was the suspension bridge and a chance to see the plethora of animals that call the wetlands their home. From the dock complete with tables, chairs, and sunbathing lounge chairs you will step aboard one of the comfortable catarafts for the float tour.

“The Kingfisher” is the most comfortable, 10-person luxury cataraft complete with comfortable swivel bucket seats to allow 360 degree wildlife viewing and bird watching. It has a solid, slip resistant floor making it easy to board and disembark from. Their quiet electric motor allows guests to hear the sounds of the birds and wildlife filling the wetlands. Your knowledgeable, experienced guide will engage you with the history and ecology of the river.

The guided float tour is accessible for all nature lovers including seniors and those with limited mobility. It is family friendly and a great chance to meet other explorers on this memorable wilderness adventure. If you are the ultimate birder plan your trip during the great migration, as the wetlands are situated on the Pacific flyway.

This is an ideal day trip to add to your exploration of the Rockies and Banff and Lake Louise area.

Self Guided Paddling

Self Guided Tours are a great option for those that have their own watercrafts, want to try a new mode of water transportation, or would prefer to explore the wetlands at their own pace. This option can be appropriate for all ages too.

You can expect to have plenty of bird watching and wildlife sightings on the river and within the wetlands. Eagles, osprey, herons, beavers, otters, deer and bears are among the 350 species of birds and mammals that call the Columbia River Valley home. Columbia Wetlands are home to the second-largest colony of Blue Herons in Western Canada.
