Winter Free Entrance Day in Glacier National Park: January 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Costs to Participate: Free guided snowshoe walk, Cost of entrance fee, Nominal fee for snowshoe rental if needed
Glacier National Park offers several snowshoeing and xc skiing options. Join a guided tour or grab a friend and explore trails leaving from Apgar Village or Lake McDonald Lodge.
Departing from Apgar Village: Apgar Bike Path is a shorter trail that connects from Apgar Village to Park Headquarters (just inside the west entrance). It is a flat trail that offers glimpses of Lower McDonald Creek. It does cross three roads and a horse path, so be cautious when crossing roads.
Lake McDonald Lodge: The Going-to-the-Sun Road offers a perfect route for exploring the heart of Glacier National Park. The road is closed to motorized vehicles in the winter at Lake McDonald Lodge. This is one of the more popular "trailheads" for those wishing to snowshoe or xc ski and offers abundant parking and two bathrooms. Take a moment to sign in on register and off you go! Do an out-and-back on the Going-to-the-Sun Road or continue on road approximately 1.3 miles from Lake McDonald Lodge and take the Johns Lake Loop. This fairly popular 1.8 mile loop hike visits Johns Lake, Sacred Dancing Cascade and McDonald Falls, on Upper McDonald Creek. *Please respect area closures.
