Monture Guard Station Cabin | Ovando, Montana

Backcountry Shelter
Monture Guard Station Cabin – Courtesy Recreation

Now serving as a seasonal work station, the building has been restored to its 1930s ranger station grandeur. The trailhead has year round access, providing one of the few places where people can drive to the edge of the backcountry in the winter. The Ranger Station is available for rent December thru April. The cabin sits at a popular entrance for cross-country and snowshoe adventures accessing the southern Bob Marshall Wilderness. It is also used as a landmark for the annual Race to the Sky sled-dog event.

A short walk up the trail reveals a magnificent stand of old growth larch, and a little farther to walk through the effects of a wildfire. During Sept-Oct observe outfitters and horseback people packing to and from hunting camps.
