Sperry Chalet | Glacier National Park, Montana
Sperry and Granite Chalets were constructed by the Great Northern Railroad in the early 1900's to accommodate tourists who came to Glacier National Park on the train. Originally, there was a series of backcountry chalets and tent camps a one-day ride apart, that visitors would reach by horseback as they traveled through the park. After World War II, many of the chalets fell into disrepair and were razed. Only two remain. Sperry Chalet operates as a full service hotel that can be reached by hiking or horseback riding.
Driving Directions from Nearest Town or Landmark
Accessible only by foot or horse. Sperry Chalet is on the west side of Glacier National Park and is commonly accessed via the Sperry Trail that begins at Lake McDonald Lodge. More ambitious hikers can approach from east side via Gunsight Pass Trail. For both trails we recommend parking at one of the Park's transit centers and taking free Glacier National Park shuttle to chosen trailhead.
Option 1: The Sperry Trail is 6.7 miles with 3,300 foot climb to chalet. It typically takes 4.5 hours to reach chalet. With this option you will hike through cedar and hemlock old growth forests with side hike options to visit lakes and a lookout. Trailhead is east of Lake McDonald Lodge parking lot.
Option 2: Access Gunsight Pass Trail from the Jackson Glacier Viewpoint on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. This route is 13.5 miles with multiple climbs totaling 3,300 feet to chalet. It takes on average 9 hours to hike. Expect an incredible journey with forests, alpine vistas, lakes, waterfalls, and a hike over the continental divide.
Horseback Option: Swan Mountain Outfitters offers daily horseback rides to the chalet for those not interested in hiking, but wanting to enjoy the alpine. This option leaves from the corral at Lake McDonald Lodge.
Historic chalet is part of a bygone era. Sperry Chalet has 17 rooms- in beautiful, rustic stone buildings amid high alpine splendour.
